Celebrate Pi Day With Some Kitchen Math

CREDITPHOTOGRAPH BY JEFFREY COOLIDGE / GETTY
"To infinity and beyond" Pi day is just another day to most people, unless you realize the significance of this year's "Pi" day..... 3-14-15 (teaching moment here people)
No it's not a day to make and eat yummy pies as my youngest daughter thought it was, even though we are celebrating this math wonder by making pie.
"Pi" does deserve some celebration and education. Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Pi is a constant number, meaning that for all circles of any size, Pi will be the same.
The diameter of a circle is the distance from edge to edge, measuring straight through the center. The circumference of a circle is the distance around.

So let's have some fun in the kitchen now and learn some math while we cook!

Brownie Marshmallow Fudge Pie
This easy to make and take pie is a great kid friendly helper recipe. Using math in the kitchen is a great way to teach life skills that your homeschoolers will remember later on. I keep a vast assortment of measuring tools in my kitchen to help teach them weights and measures.
(double the ingredients and use a larger pan for cooking)
Need these ingredients:
  • Brownie box mix (make 8×8 pan size)
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup marshmallows (any size)
  • 1 chocolate frosting (Can of "creamy home style frosting")
Prepare brownie as shown in the box, add nuts to the mixture, and bake as indicated by the box.
When ready remove from oven and add the marshmallow, bake for 3 minutes more or until the marshmallows are golden brown, remove from oven.
Heat in microwave the chocolate frosting approximately 30 seconds to make it more liquid.
Pour over brownie (do not use everything, just a little, use 1/4 of the can.)
Cool and serve!

Happy homeschooling
