Life as a Homeschool Mom

Worth a re-share, homeschool moms would mostly agree with her.I know I do, happy healthy homeschool kids are all that matters at our house! It is not an easy task, never fault yourself for your choice, just keep going one day at a time and you will be amazed at the results!

Life as a Homeschool Mom

Author: Heather from UnionCountyMommies "The Mommies Network"
Original Post April 15, 2011
If I were to meet you on the street today, I would introduce myself as Heather, stay-at-home/homeschooling mom of my daughters who are six and three. You would ask me my thoughts on the public school system and about my choice to keep them home, then about my method of teaching, and the curriculum I use. I would smile and say all the right things. I would tell you just how much I love it, how passionate I am about being their teacher, and how confident I am that this is the right choice for my family.
But that wouldn't really be the truth.
You see, more often than not I have no idea what I am doing. I second guess every decision. Homeschooling was never something I imagined myself doing, so I wonder how I got to this point, and what I was thinking. And some days I allow myself to dream about that big yellow bus pulling up in front of my house and taking my children away for the next six hours.
I love my girls dearly, of course. But the days are long, and the weeks are hectic. And I rarely get a few minutes to think, let alone have a conversation with another adult. We have days that we wake up early, get dressed and into our school room right away. And then we have others where I realize we are still in our pajamas at noon and I haven't even opened a workbook, or answered a single question.
Guilt and fear are par for the course in motherhood, but in my life they are exacerbated by being primarily responsible for my children's education. I believe that right now they learn so much through play, and have a natural curiosity to explore the world around them. But secretly, I worry that I am not smart enough to teach them all they need to know. I question whether my methods really are the best. And I'm afraid that I am doing them a huge disservice by not exposing them to a more structured learning environment.
As I start asking myself questions, I become riddled with the fear that while homeschooling is what I want for my girls, I might not be cut out for it. But then...something miraculous happens.
My youngest daughter will count to twenty, correctly read the letters off a sign as we pass by, and ask for her mountain of books at bedtime. My oldest daughter will flawlessly name the planets, sound out letters, and proudly find Italy on the world map. They will ask for more rhyming games, and sight words. They will demand just one more sheet of school work. They will run to their dad when he walks through the door, eager to tell them what they learned about that day. And they will beg to have school on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays.
And in those moments, I realize that something is working!
So a more accurate representation of the truth is that I am a stay-at-home/homeschooling mom of two. It is harder than I expected it to be. I don't know if I am making the right choices all the time. But my children are learning! And they are loving it!! And that hunger for knowledge is exactly what I wanted to instill in them all along.

Amen sister!

Field Trip~~ whoo hoo!

Who does not love the word field trip!! I know a homeschool mommy does, that sometimes means a break or another chance for teaching (which is what I love). My kids think field trip means "no work"" "fun and frolic" "play" , well ....... we do those things, but never miss an opportunity to learn something new or possibly relearn things that might have been forgotten, even by mom and dad.
Our trip this time to the Catawba Science Center, right here in our own county, was a day filled with lots of fun things to do. We also visited the Hickory Art Museum, in the same building, one of our favorite spots to visit because it is always a changing canvas of modern art, history, sculpture and imagination. I know that momma could stay in that gallery all day long and bask in the quietness and soak up the history of all that artwork. As usual ,momma is out numbered by her peeps and has to keep moving along back to the Science Center.
Enjoy some of the photos we took that day:  A little physics, some geometry, chemistry, zoology, botany, history and more all while having fun!

The Many face of our crazy Mommy~ A Lego/K'nex lesson

Leave me alone momma, but note the grin...lol, never to big to get some sugar from your momma, what happened to my little boy?
My girlies and some flash black-light photography, another lesson.

My payback, Mr B got me, in the ear......yuck--- slimed, lesson learned by momma.
Have a blessed day!!

What a crazy week!!

What a crazy week here at the ol' Blockhouse!! Even though I have been off work a few days, the craziness seems more that a really busy shift in the ER. We had a birthday girl turn 9 on Tuesday, whoo hoo for the "cheetah -girl" who is sassier that ever. My daddy got to come home from the hospital a little earlier that my mom thought, not sure if that is good or not. His liver cancer is growing now and probably outside his liver, which they are calling "in the nodules". He needs to get stronger before more chemo, but the mention of going to a "rehab facility" or " assisted living" facility seemed to get his attention...."Oh no I'm not". Maybe that will get his butt in gear for healing at home.

And to top the cake my hubby finally got to have his back surgery today, 3 months after his fall at work on an icy December morning. He is recouping well tonight and will hopefully get to go back to work in 6-8 wks or less. My brain is about fried tonight and I am still up, so I am blogging away.

Algebra I has also contributed to the short circuiting of my brain tissue this week. My teenager has some struggles with his math and thought Mom was gonna know how to do those equations. Well after some heavy thinking and figuring we actually got it. A light bulb went off and he and I actually understood all those multi- step equations. Go momma go...... Go K- Dogg go.... now what is next??

To top off the entire week, we had a wonderful winter storm with about 6 inches of snow, IN MARCH!!
Cheetah- girl says that it snowed for her birthday :)

Chow for now!!

Sim racing pics by Kdogg74

This is why we race online ;) that #74 car in the air is
my teenager, who also painted this car himself using
computer graphics in Paintshop Pro 8. "Bad wreck in
practice lap he tells me". I post many pictures of the
2 little sisters and this time I wanted to show how
proud I was of the teen that lives here also, my 9th
grade racer "Kdogg74" The #74 was his old football
jersey number and he had kept with that number
racing online and go-karts in the dirt. Funny how
this little boy of mine once learned all his
colors and numbers before kindergarten by race
cars. He could tell me all the Nascar cars, numbers,
colors and the drivers before he was 5. I never
imagined that teaching him at an early age would
lead to this :) By the way, he is not a "little boy"
anymore, he is taller that me, and I have been
about 5'9" since the 6th grade.

SBS racing online, his 2nd sprint car

After a hard 60 lap race in Nascar 2003season,
Kdogg74finished 3rd. The Hardees car was painted
by driver.

Here is # 74 again, Hardees orange and white painted
by Kdogg74.

This car is my favorite, done in Paintshop pro8. You
can see why I bought him his own laptop with a
higher graphics card. I think we have found our niche
and can lean towards computer careers with our
homeschool high school courses. He actually taught
himself how to do all this with some help of some
great guys online via "teamspeak" at various online
sim racing forums and race1online. He has even
created his own website without my help
"Trial by Fire Racing www.tbfr.webs.com/ .
