Unplugging: Can You Do It? Your Family Will Love You For It

I don't know about you but my family craves my attention all the time. I have learned that unplugging every now and then is the best thing a mom can do for her family. Put that phone away, close your computer and get out and live life without technology for a little while. Take a walk, go outside and play with the kids, do some housework without looking at your phone every 5 min. Your family and your stress level will thank you for unplugging. Not to mention you will sleep better without the light from your phone. This can be painless momma, its not forever.

The American Kitchen: What's Inside Yours?

For many households in America the kitchen is the hub of the family. What is inside your kitchen usually depends on your taste in food and decor. My kitchen is crawling with chickens and roosters, because of my love for the feathered art of "chickeness" lol.
No matter what your kitchen is filled with it can be a place of danger or delight. The infographic below is a prime example of both.

Smile for Mother Earth Today- Happy Earth Day #atozchallenge

Earth Day was first suggested by John McDonnell (from the United States) in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference on the Environment. The United Nations began an Earth Day celebration on the March Equinox and continued this celebration every year since.
Responding to global warming and other environmental degradation, Gaylord Nelson (a Wisconsin Senator) called for an environmental teach-in to be held on April 22, 1970. This Earth Day involved over 2000 colleges and universities and roughly 10,000 primary and secondary schools. The main purpose of the day was to promote environment awareness and reform.
Earth Day is still celebrated on 2 days - the March Equinox and April 22nd. The April date usually involves more schools. In fact, Earth Week has evolved from this precious day allowing students, teachers and parents to have more time to learn about environmental awareness.
Earth day is intended for all of us to recognize how we influence our limited resources from our planet. There are often activities, campaigns and events scheduled on this day to promote awareness of Earth issues. You may choose to participate in a local event or start your own! Some ideas that you could put in motion are:
  • Pick up trash on the playground
  • Help Mom and Dad with recycling garbage at home
  • Plant a tree

Oh No You Don't :11 Facts About Bullying , WakeUp! Do Something #atozchallenge

What can you do about bullying?
Teach your kids what bullies are, what cyberbullies are. Respect for others begins at home, teach your kids to respect others, that way they don't become the bully.
Have a plan if your child is ever bullied, they already know it is ok to come to you and tell you about the activity. If a friend is being bullied it is ok to tell a parent or another adult, just standing by and doing nothing will not help the problem go away.
Educate yourself and your family about violence. Do it now!

I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies Psalm18:3
Psalm 55:22  Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.

11 Facts about Bullying that just tear my hide up! As a mom especially.

  • Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year.

  • 1 in 4 teachers see nothing wrong with bullying and will only intervene 4 percent of the time.

  • Approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying.

  • 1 in 7 students in grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying.

  • 56 percent of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school.

  • Over two-thirds of students believe that schools respond poorly to bullying, with a high percentage of students believing that adult help is infrequent and ineffective.

  • 71 percent of students report incidents of bullying as a problem at their school.

  • 90 percent of 4th through 8th graders report being victims of bullying.

  • 1 out 10 students drop out of school because of repeated bullying.

  • Harassment and bullying have been linked to 75 percent of school-shooting incidents.

  • Physical bullying increases in elementary school, peaks in middle school and declines in high school.  Verbal abuse, on the other hand, remains constant.

  • A 2009 survey found that 9 out of 10 LGBT youth reported being verbally harassed at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation.

These statistics are sickening and embarrassing to me, I can not believe that in America we can let this kind of activity go on in our school systems, systems that our tax dollars pay for!!
Another reason I will continue to homeschool my children until they graduate high school. Now I do realize that they can be bullied anywhere at anytime, even online, but they have been educated enough to know that it is wrong and will not be tolerated. This momma bear would not be happy if she found out her child had been bullied and somebody stood by watching and did nothing.
As a parent, I can not believe that other parents let bullying occur in schools without raising the roof off the school building.
Just my personal opinion. They say homeschool kids are not socialized, my teen daughter told me she did not want to socialize with bullies and drama, she wants to learn, that is why she is happy at home.

Side Effects of Soda~ How is it impacting your family's health?

No Soda you say! Yep that's right our household (with the exception of a certain daddy) has gone soda-less.
I thought at one point in my life that I could not live without my diet Mountain Dew daily, but over that last year or so, I have slowly cut back and just lost the taste for any thing soda related. Some of my medications yes have helped with that problem, but I just found myself liking other things instead. Same thing goes for my teenager, he had nearly cut his soda intake in half, and now after reading some of the data, he has nearly cut all the soft drinks out of his diet also. I started doing some research about what is actually in soft drinks and fruit drinks that we give our kids all the time, I was totally shocked. The effects on our body is even greater and a better reason to just not buy it anymore! Green tea for me now!

The infographic below was the real reason I stopped drinking soda all together!

15 Grammar Goofs~That Make You Look Silly

A great reason to tell your older children why we have to learn correct grammar, this infographic tells all.
There is nothing like being on Facebook with your teen and noticing that he/she has posted a status update with misspelled words and bad grammar. Epic Fails~
This was a great refresher for myself, I love to write and blog, but not always using the best wording or grammar to get my words across.
